One major difference with a VW engine was that the Porsche engine case was in 3 parts instead of 2. Plus the fact that anything Porsche will cost you MUCH more than an equivalent VW part. There is an informative chapter on this in the Bill Fisher book. I believe the last year of the 912 was actually called the 912E and used the type 4 VW engine.
