I don't think it is fair to bother Berg about this. A LOT of places sell stock VW 1500/1600 valve springs as HD, or whatever. The ONLY way to know what you've got is to measure them. Any auto machine shop would be glad to help you with this. They all have the usual valve spring testers, so all you need is the force and compressed length from the Bentley. > Lap the cylinders in... coarse valve grinding compound at first then the > fine stuff, and providing your studs are secure your blowby problem will go > away. Examine the cylinder surface as you go to see if it is cleaning up evenly all around or if you see a series of high spots that correlate with what we see in those photos. > > Did not lap the cylinders in. Then use them to lap the head surface just to make sure that the head surface is flat, too. The pattern we see looks more like it might be due to machining chatter, but it's really low frequency. I flycut my own heads on a milling machine and have never had this problem. OTOH, it never occured to me that this might be possible. Were the head studs all equally tight when you took off the head? How does the seating surface on the case look? - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
