Everything is different on the beetle dist, so you need to find out where #1 
really falls, then wire accordingly. You'll have to take off the right side valve 
cover then turn the engine over to TDC and check to see if both the #1 valves 
are closed. If not, do another 360. Once you're at #1 TDC, find where the dist 
is pointing and then wire the dist accordingly. Then look for a real type 3 dist. 
The dists were machined with oil ports in their stems which will not get 
properly oiled if installed in a different direction in the case.

This leak will probably be insignificant, but I would plug it if you drive in hot 
weather.

You can static time it, or borrow a timing light. There are just too many 
unknowns to leave this to chance. Since it is one thing that you can do, do it.
