<x-charset iso-8859-1>I tried starting the Fastback today, and the best I could get was some popping out of the right carb and a couple pops out of the tailpipe. I squirted a little gas down the carb throats to get that far, because I'm not getting fuel to the carbs. I think I have the fuel pump hooked up backwards or something, but I'm not sure since my Bentley covers F.I. only. I have what appears to be a stock pump, with two ports on it. Looking at it from the top, the lower port points straight forward, while the upper port points off toward the left front. My first question is which port is fuel in, and which is fuel out. I can't find markings on the pump. I BELIEVE I have the wires on right, though that leads to my second question. I have a Beetle distributor, in which I put new points, condensor, cap and rotor. I set the point gap to spec using a feeler gauge. I installed the distributor according to the instructions in my Bentley (though it seems fool-proof, since it can only go in one way.) I then installed the wires starting with terminal at the #1 mark on the distributor, then continuing clockwise to cylinder #4, #3, and finally #2. With the Beetle distributor, the #1 mark on the distributor body points over to the left front of the motor. Is this correct, or would the mark be different for a Type 3 distributor? Question #3 is a bit more basic. I don't have an air cleaner for the carbs yet, and the breather on the back of the motor isn't connected to anything. Right now I'm trying to get the motor to run to determine if it is fundamentally good; I'll look for an air cleaner at the next swap meet. Is that opening on the breather a huge vacuum leak that needs to be plugged or will the engine run with that open? I think I'm close to getting this thing started. It appears that I'm getting spark (though I don't know if its at the right time) and I have compression. If I can get some fuel in the carbs, I could be okay.
