I had a fan housing bolt come lose and get trapped between the fan housing and the fan -- very unusual sound. The particular screw that loosened on my '69 was in a position to grind off the fan blade mounts in a circle around the front of the fan in just a couple of hundred miles. :( It was the start of a road trip with a... 3 or 4? year old child, at night, to go to a VW show, so it took a couple of hours to turn around and get home to where we could work on the car in saner conditions and diagnose the problem, etc. See...
