Greg's suggestion of loose fan housing screws is probably the best one. You really can't rely on just listening to locate sounds like this. Stick a long screwdriver down on the block and then put your ear to the blunt end. Moving the working end around will reveal lots of sounds that you never heard before and let you tell better where they are actually coming from. When I install a fan housng, I tap the holes deeper, use longer bolts and Loctite. As you are probably about to find out, these are really hard to get to, so you really don't want them coming loose. Plus, they will do a lot of damage to the fan.
