Don't add any new solder, that's what that white tape warning on the outside 
of the case was trying to tell you, in German. Just warm up the low melting 
point solder that's there and let it reflow. 

Don't sand the points. That can leave abrasive dust in the clock and also 
leave some embedded in the points. Use a point file if you REALLY think you 
must do something; it is seldom necessary.

I like to replace the resistor that is in parallel with the solenoid with a 1N4002.

Clean and oil the mechanism.
