I think it's a good idea to get a new cap. The oil is probably a good lubricant, but this is a way for it to leak out, since the CV joint boots don't really seal that well. If your CV boot ever tore it would make an even bigger mess. You might want to double check the torque on the center bolt before you install the cap. I'll bet that these caps are still available from the dealers. They were a common replacement part, and they may have been used on Rabbits, too. I guess the biggest consideration is that transmissions are lots more expensive than CV joints.
