Do you mean that the axle stub (output flange) is hollow?!? That seems odd 
to me, but then again im not that familar with the IRS tranny. The IRS 
tranny's I have seen the axle stub is a solid piece. From inner to outer 
its; stub, gasket, CV, gasket, flange/boot, axle, etc.
