I assume that a 12V solenoid would swap right in in place of the 6V unit. You 
just have to remove the white plastic back and 3 more nuts inside and lift off 
the brown plastic plate that's underneath.

I would not try to remove anything from the front. I think this can't be done 
without severe damage.
