I've had the back covers off before, but I'd never realized that the solenoid was part of an easily separable unit. Sure enough, I could take 'em right out. I think this can't be done > without severe damage. I've had the rings off the front before, but I haven't done it for some time. I had another go at it tonight -- I've got a couple of spares. Once you carefully pry off the chrome rings, there are two more rings to remove. Here's what I'd forgotten, though -- the lens, along with the sprung winding knob, lifts right out once the rings are removed. I took the best rings and lens/knob from three donor clocks, and they're now on the 1963 clock. It's looking pretty clean from the front. I gave it a wind with 6v. (This was before taking off the back cover -- btw, the anti-tamper cover came off in such a way that I think I'll be able to put it back on!) After winding it would tick a few ticks, then stop. If I quickly rotated the whole unit back and forth a few times, it would tick a few more ticks. It seemed to be ticking longer as I went, but I could be wrong. I could get it wound down enough that it would take another electic wind. This all got old pretty quickly. With the cover and solenoid off, I can't yet tell why it doesn't want to tick. I'll have to look at it in better light.
