Are they the same bars > as can be found in the same year or later bugs? Type 3 torsion bars are unique, and L is different from R. Squares are also different from fasty, notch, T34s. You also didn't say which broke, front or rear. I don't think raising or lowering would have made the bar more likely to break, unless the spline was damaged in the process.
