I believe Maserati is not owned by Volkswagen but by FIAT who also own Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. And, VW does not own Porsche either. (Porsche is owned by its own shareholders and the family is still a big proportion of those shareholders. I don't believe Volkswagen has any significant shareholding in Porsche. However, VW's current CEO, Ferdinand Piech who is due to retire next year, is Ferdinand Porsche's grandson. So, it can become a bit incestuous at times!) And, with the cheapest VW branded car in Europe being a VW Lupo, two other VW-owned companies, Skoda and SEAT, have cheaper models: the Skoda Felicia and the SEAT Arosa. (For a comparison of prices in Europe see "2002 Autokatalog" published by Motor-Verlage, Stuttgart). So, I don't think the Volkswagen brand is "the bottom of their vehicle line-up". But, if you take into account currency valuations probably the cheapest product of a VW-controlled company in the world would be the South African VW Citi-Golf (which is a Golf I or Rabbit still in production there) or perhaps even the Brazilian VW Gol (which is like a Golf III but with a north-south engine). Perhaps the most expensive VW-controlled brand would be a Rolls Royce but when the new W18 Bugatti model starts coming off the production line in France it would be the most expensive, especially after BMW take over the Rolls Royce brand in January 2003. I suppose the biggest product of a VW-controlled company would be one of the Scania range of Swedish-built trucks. Although VW do Brasil also makes some large Cummins-engined trucks, too. And, I imagine the smallest car produced by a VW-controlled company would have to be the German VW Lupo and the Spanish SEAT Arosa which are basically the same car with different badges, trim and options. However, I don't suppose all this has much to do with VW Type3s!!!!!
