On mine I had to widen the orginal one (about 10 mm too narrow between > bolt holes) as I didn't have a later style to use, but I think Tom used a > late one for his conversion. I made a new plate. A piece of steel salvaged from an old shelf brace and two nuts welded to it over the holes drilled in it at the correct spacing for the late column. I looked at using the late plate but it really wasn't going to fit inside the early dash. The rubber insulator I just cut in half and then a slight trim and it bolted right in. The cut isn't noticeable. >the late column tube is to short to use in the early cars, that can be solved by > useing the early tube with the late head unit (on mine I even used the late > shaft). exactly what I did but I used the early shaft. The replacement turn signal switch had a bonus- the wire circuit needed for the euro parking side lights. My year of choice was the donor '69 FB that the pan came out of, all courtesy of the PO. Same parts used in a T3 as a T1 from '68 on. Most people don't even notice that the steering head is the "wrong" one for an early car. I even re-keyed my door locks to match the later "K" code ignition switch. If you have ignition switch problems (or wiper switch) like Russ and don't have to have a "correct" car, this will fix any and all wiper and ign. switch problems at a very low price. Well, off to pick up my latest project. A new body for my bug. And what might that be? A 1951 Split Window Bug!
