<x-charset iso-8859-1>Jim: Old VW FI cars almost almost run poorly if not kept by a knowledgeable owner! Badly adjusted valves, timing and vacuum leaks are likely all involved here. Chances are that the bugs can be worked out fairly easily but of course it's a risk. I'm usuallly optimistic and at worst if all the other stuff is great and the car is cheap enough add the cost of a used or rebuilt engine and see if the price tag is still acceptable. Don't forget that if the car has been motionless for awhile that you WILL be putting money into brakes. Also, don't (do what I've done and) buy a car with rust! Good luck, Andre > "OK the body and interior are in good condition. > Its the engine where the problem is. It will start but won't idle. It runs > very rough. I think its in the valves.
