AS someone else posted, it is probably those 2 screws which have
come loose. Don't run the engine any more until you fix it. You
were almost there with everything off except the fan. You MAY be
able to just wiggle the fan off, but DON'T pry on it, it will bend! If
you have to buy/borrow/rent a steering wheel puller, just do it. It
pulls via 2 M8 x 1.25 bolts into the hub.

Even with the fan in place you can check this. The front housing
half should be TIGHT to the case. If it is not there are some screws
loose. Even if it seems tight, you could have some loose and some
tight. There are a total of 4 small screws, plus the large bolt that
holds the "handle" onto the rear of the rear housing half.

I HATE it when these come loose, so I always drill and tap those
holes deeper when I rebuild an engine, and use the longest screws
that will fit in there. Then I use Locktite in addition to the star
washers that VW provided.
