If you could hear a click, then you know that the power is getting to 
the solenoid, so the shifter contacts are OK.

I agree. My 73 AT does the same thing on occasion. It's always 
after a long drive on a hot day. It's a typical summer gas stop 
scenario. I haven't really figured out a cure yet, but it might just 
require the extra relay trick. My guess is that the resistance of the 
copper winding in the solenoid goes up just enough with temp to 
limit the current to an amount that is not quite enough to pull in the 
bendix. It's only happened to me once, so it really hasn't been 
enough of a bother to worry about yet.
