> After filling her up, she would not start. Just a click would be heard. Many air-cooled VWs have this problem, which can be overcome (I don't say cured) by a number of methods. Mine started doing it again just the other day after 3 years of being fine. Firstly, tap the motor case. If it starts now, it's got to be poor contact between the brushes and the commutator or the starter gear sticking on the shaft. The brushes form part of the first stage circuit to make the solenoid force the starter gear to engage with the ring gear and inch the motor round so the gears mesh nicely. Solve this by dismantling and cleaning the starter motor and lubricating the starter gear. If the brushes are not free-moving and have plenty of length and hence spring tension, change them. Details on the website under starter overhaul. http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/starter.htm If the starter switch contacts are failing, save its function with an additional relay by the battery, intercepting the wire to the solenoid. There is a connector terminal by the battery or under the carpet below the seat, depending on year, at least on the later ones. This will also overcome corroded connections anywhere 'upstream', so may solve the problem at a stroke. You will probably find it goes on starting perfectly for weeks or months, but the next hot journey it will repeat the problem. This is normal; it's not just getting vengeful again! You may find re-starting the moment you stop (or even as you slow to a halt!) will reset 'start-mode'. I think it is caused by expansion of the commutator causing slightly worse contact between it and the brushes after it has cooled a little, or wear ridge interference on contraction. Hence the cure by tapping. Although the resistance of the solenoid coil does increase when hot, the fact that it often won't restart cold without that initial tap (but then will be fine again for weeks) suggests it's not the main reason for the problem.
