Hello all, I own a 1970 Fastback AT/FI that is driven daily. This past weekend I went to a VW show 2 hours away. The fasty handled it like a champ! On the way back home, after about an hour into the trip, I decided to stop to fill up the tank. After filling her up, she would not start. Just a click would be heard. So I thought that the contacts under the AT shifter were needing some cleaning. They were clean, still would not start. We checked the battery and cleaned the terminals to be sure. Still no go. We checked the fuses and all were fine. So then the attention was given to the starter. I checked the connections and they were there and in proper place. I had my father attempt starting again and I could hear and feel the selenoid clicking. I then grabbed my handy dandy tire iron and hit it (selenoid) a few times and my father then tried to start. VRRROOOOOMMMM!! It started After we made it home I turned the car off and tried to restart. It would not start, same symptoms!! In the morning I tried and it started!! My conclusion is that the selenoid does not like to work when hot. I have driven the car for the past four days with no glitch. My questions are the following: Why does this happen? Can the selenoid be rebuilt? I have been told that Ford selenoids can be used as replacements, true? Lastly, what can/should be done to avoid future problems? By the way this happened before, after a 4 hour trip and I simply wiggled the shifter a few times and it started. So I cleaned the shifter contacts. ....Thank you..Alex (sorry for the lengthy post) -- Alex Magro '70 Fastback AT/FI '92 Jetta EcoDiesel __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
