Taking Russ's advice, I reassembled the flywheel with the original shims and planned to live with the excessive endplay until I could do a complete rebuild this winter. No problem, right? As I spin the engine around on my bench to start clean it up for reassembly of the cooling tin and such, I notice that part of the cooling flap linkage is missing. Closer inspection reveals that the PO had removed the thermostat and related linkage and had bent part of the coolinf flap on one side up over the fan housing so that the flaps would be open all the time. *** Side Note: Even though I bought the car from Jim, he never worked on it or anything., All of this can be attributed to the owners before Jim. *** So anyway, I figure I can just use the fan and thermostat from my Fasty engine for now, so I pull the fan and stuff off and degrease the engine some and it is looking pretty good. I figure the next stop is to check the head studs and the valves. All the head stids are fine and hold the 23 ft-lbs of torque.....except one! Bottom rear stud for #1 cylinder. Duh-Oh!!1 So here is the decision I need to make......do I live with one loose head stud for the next 6 months or so? Or do I swap all the necessary parts from the 66 Carb/6V engine to my known good 71 FI Auto shortblock? I am presuming that I would need to swap heads, carb linkage stuff, rear engine hanger stuff, distributor, flywheel, engine tin, and I am sure a bunch of other things. I don't really want to do a complete teardown and rebuild of the 66 motor until I take it off the road for the winter. What do you all think? Thanks, John Jaranson '71 FI Auto Fasty (organ donor??)
