It might not last 6 months, but I would still go ahead and put it back in so you can at least drive it a bit and get a feeling for what else might be wrong before you jump into a rebuild. Otherwise there is a pretty good chance that you'll miss something important. There's really no good substitute for running experience with a car to tell you what kind of work it needs.
