With the pump end facing you and the electrical connector pointing 
to the right, the metal cap that the plunger is in should point to the 
right (3 O'clock) and the notch should point to about 4 O'clock, I 
think. I'll have to double check tonight.

The pump won't work without that rubber tip. I don't have them separately.

You really should fix it now, so that it doesn't confuse you later. 
Depending on which way it is off, it may keep you from setting the 
timing right.
