If you are not, hook a test light to the distributor side of the coil and ground. As the engine rotates, the light should go off and on, as the points open and close. If the light doesn't come on, there is something shorted to ground. If the light stays on, then there is something open in the points circuit. (such as a bad ground wire) If you don't have a test light, you can use a voltmeter, and watch the voltage fluctuate between 12V (light on) and 0V (light off).
