What is the proper gauge to use? For my '71 Fastback, where I need sheet metal for repairs, I am going the use the roof of my '69 squareback parts car. A large flat area, that I will probably never use for anything else anyway. And it is the same gage as the rest of the car. Go to a salvage yard, and get a large panel off of about any car. even if it is damaged, you can get a lot of good metal out of it, and they will probably give it to you.
