Happy 5th of May, I recently rebuilt the engine in my 1970 SB ~ stock 1600 with FI All was fine and dandy for approx 200 miles, and yes, I've been taking it easy during break-in. Compression was solid at 135 on all four cyls. and the engine was running cool. The other morning I went outside to start her up and the engine sounded like p**p, it seemed as if it was only running on 2 cylinders. I was getting good spark to all 4 plugs, I checked fuel pressure and that seemed ok, maybe a bit low (27#), I pulled the injectors and they were working properly. A compression check showed 135 at 1,2 and 4 cyls, BUT #3 was reading 90#. I then installed another FI brain that I knew was good and made sure all wires were solid. It was late, so the next day I went to start her up, and she was running great! Compression was back up to 135 in cyl#3. I shut the car off and left for work in my always dependable 66 westy. When I arrived back home, anxious to start up the SB, my wife had moved the car out of the garage and she said the car was running poorly again, arrgh!!! Another compression check showed 90# on #3. So, off went the car to my trusty mechanic for a peek. The same thing happened to him, the car would run great for 5 minutes or so and then start running rough. He performed a leakdown test and the car passed with flying colors. He's stumped, I,m at my wits end... The only thing I can think of is that there's a problem with the #3 intake valve. The heads I used were new VW and were taken to my machine shop for a 3 angle grind before installation. Any ideas before I pull the engine I just spent months carefully putting back together? Thanks, and I apologize for being so long-winded Scott Moeller Kirkland, WA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
