A related story in respect to this problem:
My wife called me one sunday morning that her car had made a "bang" under
the hood, and wouldn't start. I went to the parking lot where she was at,
and raised the hood. The whole top was gone off the battery. What had
happened, was that the battery had a post that was broken, internally in the
battery. When she hit the starter, there was a spark that ignited hydrogen
gas in the battery, and there was a hydrogen explosion destroying the
battery.
Since it was a sunday morning, The only store open to get a battery was
Sears. Installed the new battery, stopped by the car wash, washed the
engine, and took the remains of the old battery back to Sears for exchange.
They didn't want to touch it....

This may be your problem, a loose post inside the battery. See if you can
wiggle the posts. they should be solid.
