I spent some time about a week ago working on my sandrail. FYI to those of you who said that Thing (181) drums will fit Type 3 backing plates. They don't fit. Thing drums fit Type 1 backing plates. This is a bummer because the Type 3 rear brakes are bigger than Type 1. So, since I've purchased some new German 181 drums ($100 for a pair), I'm stuck with them. My whole point was to get the 5x205 bolt pattern in the rear with IRS. O'well. I'll have to use the b*g backing plates. This is really a shame too. I wanted to convert my late model Type 3's to the 5x205 bolt pattern as well as the sandrail. By using 181 drums in the back and using the front disc brake set up from Custom Speed Parts - http://www.customspeedparts.com/. Anyway. I replaced the transaxel in the rail. If you don't remember, the rail I got was missing an engine, front beam and wheels/tires. Plus some miscellaneous stuff. The old trans had a broken reverse gear. I'll have to take it apart to see if it has any goodies inside. My new trans has a 4:37 ring and pinion, hardened side cover, and close 2nd and 3rd. And it has a hydraulic clutch - this came with the sandrail. Seems pretty cool. I've never had one before. Bolted up the motor. I need to revamp the exhaust system. It has dual quiet packs and a bug pack (I think) system. I may have someone build a completely custom system. I'd like everything to be on top of the motor. Better clearance. I haven't figured out how I'll keep sand/dirt from the air intake. I bought a front beam from Averres. $125 for a kinglink and pin from a 65 bug. Works pretty well. I have a pair of turned drums. They are essentially cut down to about 1/2" width. The backing plates are gone along with everything else. I need to get the brake lines set up. I have the line from the master cylinder to the turn brakes. But it stops there. The lines from the turn brakes to the wheel cylinders are missing. Still need rear wheels/tires. This is going to be expensive. About $700 for two paddles and two aluminum rims. Anyone ever purchased anything from Kustom 1 Warehouse? - http://www.kustom1warehouse.com/ They have good prices, but I'm leery of them. I read a negative post on RAMVA. I'm hoping to have some pics soon.
