The smell of raw gas is noticeable different than exhaust fumes. Make sure you look for gas line leaks while running or immediately after shut down. The gas will evaporate quickly and hide the leak. I had an exhaust smell inside the car before rebuilding the carbs. My mileage was down to 17-18 mpg and the car was running really rich. I still haven't replaced the rear hatch seal because the smell left after the rebuild.
