CO is higher if there is too much fuel in the mixture being burnt. I suspect you need to adjust the carb mixture control screw, or cure a leaking needle jet. Carbs should only have around 3%, but I guess that might register, as it was a way people used to commit suicide in the 'good old days'. If it smells fumey, there could easily be more like 8% CO simply due to a maladjusted carb. FI has a CO level of about 0.5%, which I wouldn't expect to set off a CO detector (but a '66 would be carbs, I assume). Dave.
