Yes, I am guilty of always experimenting with additives to all my engines and trannies, yes I know, for some of you it is a big ' no no' because of past bad experiences. I have had all of these bad experiences since I am addicted to experimenting. I am kind of like Tim Taylor and all of his accidents. I drove truck for a month with 30 to 40 pounds of compression . This was possible with 140 weight axil fluid instead of engine oil, lots of smoke produced in the Mexican countryside, I have corrected my evil ways, still have the truck, no motor yet. The additive in question this time was the tranny fluid stuff. In my last tranny oil change a week ago or two, I accidentally added way too much of that synthetic stuff I bought. Well I was almost 2 quarts over and it showed, oil on the mufller, oil all over the bottom of the tranny and engine. Everything down there seemed to be spewing this tranny blood. The oil was not foaming up and going through the tube which I would have suspected , I guess I did not leave any room for air to churn up the oil into foam. This VW did not only marked it's spot in my parking space at work , it also crapped and puked there. It was embarrasing to have people see me come in, smoking like an old steam engine and crapping profusly on the parking spot. They would tell me " Now that you fixed the noise polluting muffler, now you are polluting the air and ground to compensate. I did not know I overfilled my tranny, I did not check, I was so tired that day (a couple of weekends ago) , I just filled what I bought. I thought I had a leak so I inspected the bottom of the tranny without checking fluid level. I found leakage comming from the kickdown switch connection and the fillertube 'o' ring area. I would have not found this if I did not overfill. so the next day I went to NAPA and got some of that tranny conditioner additive to soften hardened and shrunk 'o' rings. So I added to the still overfilled tranny. the level on the oil spade was four inches above the fill level . I had to wait the weekend to drain some of that fluid off. My leakage was greatly cut down with the additive. This past Friday I drained the excess fluid and added more of the sealant addidtive and a new shift additive that caught my eye at NAPA until the fluid level was just below max. The new additive was made by Hurst and it was compatible with Dexron fluid, our trannies use. I have known and read about this stuff before. It has friction modifiers that increase clutch "grab" that is similar to Fords type F fluid. The Dexron fluid was designed to have more 'slippage' than other fluids to give it a smoother transition between gear shifts. Clutches and bands must be made for this fluid. Type 'F' fluid was made to have less slippage for it's designed tranny clutches. The Ford trannies are designed for tighter but less luxurious shifting on their older trannies. So having this info, Chevy racers would put Ford type 'F' fluid on their trannies and get much harsher/crisper shifting. The dragsters with the 2 speed Chevy torqueflight autotrannies always use fluids similar to type "F" in their tighter clutches that normally use more slipping Dexron fluid. They use these trannies to go from zero to 300 miles an hour in four seconds. How is this relevant to our cars? Well our cars are Dexron fluid compatible with tight clutches that use more slippery fluid . Having placed the Hurst tranny additive, made my tranny shift much tighter almost immediately and quicker. The car does not go any faster but as advertized, the tranny should run cooler and last longer, this is very good , especially for those old trannies. This is possible by decreasing slippage from the bands and clutches, slippage causes friction and heat. Another brand that makes a similar product is ' B and M' . Look up the information I mentioned on the internet to get a better idea on the subject of tranny fluid and friction. A side note, never but never place Dexron fluid in a type 'F' tranny because it will only last a week until the tranny burns up, low friction fluid and low friction clutches equals lots of slippage and burning parts, I cried on that one. Just thought you guys would like to know. Research the info before adding stuff to your tranny or wait until I break mine on this stuff. I really expect more life out of this tranny, still works perfect.
