I made a "tool" that consists of a 1/4" tube that I can connect from one engine to another, oil cooler to oil cooler. With this, I can use a good operating engine to pump a bit of oil into a "dry" engine and at least fill its passages and probably the pump, too. It really doesn't take much, but I DO keep an eye on the donor engine to make sure that its oil level doesn't drop too low. OTOH, I have seldom used this. I can't imagine trying to turn over an engine from the dist drive gear. The gear ratio is working against you, and I doubt if those gears are strong enough for those kinds of stresses; it certainly wouldn't work on a VW. Just look at the mechanical advantage that a starter motor gets (drive pinion to flywheel ring gear.) If you just want to turn over the engine wouldn't it make more sense to bolt up a starter motor? Even on a VW where the starter bolts to the transmission, most shops would have an old tranny or tranny case lying around that a starter could be mounted to. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
