I checked it out and I believe you're right. These appear to be what 
is called a "starved lead-acid" cell. The acid is absorbed into a kind 
of wick that holds it in place in spite of its position. 

Gates makes a series of cells in sizes similar to flashlight batteries 
that are like this. Sold under the trade name Cyclon, they are used 
in some battery packs for portable power tools. I have a lawn 
trimmer that has a single Cyclon D-cell in it.
