Yesterday, I added two parts to the stack of parts I'm having powder coated. A Type 34 engine cover and a Type 34 shroud that goes across the engine. That should run up my bill to about $150. I picked up a coil, a clutch, and a pressure plate for the 25 Hp engine for $155. I got word that Klaus Jacobsen had received my money and was packing the 25 Hp carburetor for shipment. I also got the 40 Hp engine outa hock. I found a seized 40 Hp in the bus. So, now I have two 40 Hp engines. I don't know anything about the 2nd 40 Hp. But the first one needed align boring to save the case. This is the last rebuild for it, as the case is more or less worn out to 0.080 oversize. Cost was $260. I got four new rods, as one of the old ones had been beat on with a hammer to tighten it up, and I didn't want to take a chance. It probably wouldn't have lasted more than about 5,000 miles anyhow. Still to come are the pistons, jugs, and heads, which need to be checked out. I remember that the exhaust valves need to be replaced rather than reground. Lee Roy at Knight's told me that if a 0.003 feeler gauge arm hangs up the oil pump, the oil pump is probably good. Likewise, if it goes through, the oil pump is probably worn out. That's a pretty good rule of thumb, if it works. Finally, my new hand (Scott) went down to Sam's and looked at some temporary car covers that might be used as a paint booth. I chose a size that would accommodate the 23-window bus. Anyone ever use one of these temporary car covers as a paint booth? They cost about $250 and will enclose the bus (and hence the Zwitter) easily. They can be torn apart and rebuilt around a particular car or stored in spare space. The Zwitter needs three coats of paint. The bus needs three or four coats. What's everyone's thoughts about using a temporary car cover as a paint booth?
