I think it's likely that your ignition timing is off.

The first thing would be to set the dwell and timing. You really can't 
replace the points without doing that.

The shift coupling or the set screw at the rear could be loose, or 
the plastic bushing at the front of the shift rod could be gone, but 
the grinding is probably there because the clutch return spring on 
the outside of the transmission is broken. Without this spring, it is 
impossible to tell if your clutch pedal free play is correct.
