Thanks to this mail list and a little tinkering, my 68 Squareback is back on the road. I road tested it last night and drove it to work this morning. Americruise is in town and I thought a VW would be a great addition to the cars cruising main street. I do, however, have a few of questions. Being my first VW, I'm not sure how it should drive or feel... First, someone told me this was just a "feature" of the fuel injection, but she is a dog in first. I really have to get the rpms up before letting out the clutch to get moving. When I depress the petal slightly, it almost sounds as if its going to stall, and if I let out the clutch right then, it will. Is that normal? I think the accelerator cable needs adjusted ? When its cold, she starts with a little pop, like a muffled backfire and idles a little sporadically. As soon as it warms up, it starts like dream and idles great! I replaced the distributor cap and points, it probably needs to be timed, right? I also had cracked fuel injectors, and replaced those. Is there anything else I need to do to complete the job? Finally, when going into second, if you don't put it back just right, it will grind. The guy I bought it from said, "VW's just do that." But that doesn't sound right. The shifting rod (I think that's what you would call it) is really loose. Could it need adjusting? I looked through the Hayes manual and it looked like that might be an afternoon job...? Or could this be an indication of a larger problem? Any advice I can get is greatly appreciated. I love this car. Thanks again.
