Date: 7/25/01 9:25:58 PM Central Daylight Time From: trialsin26@hotmail.com (Robert Noordermeer) To: type3@vwtype3.org Hello All, Quick question.....I'm in the process of removing my engine, and i was removing the drive axle. I removed the big lug nut by the brake drum on the passenger side just fine, but the oneon the driver side would not move. I use a breaker bar, liquid wrench, and I jumped up and down on it, and it still did not come loose. Any ideas? Torch maybe? Thanks in advance for you help. Robert. There's a good reason that you cant budge the axle nut. It's on there at 235 ft-lbs torque, if it's done right. Use an air impact wrench or the trusty wrench that you can buy at your local flaps for $8 that also requires a three lb. hammer. Hammer the axle nut off. Or, you might get someone with the impact wrench to loosen it for you. It needs to be put back on at 235 ft-lbs, so be careful when you take it off. It requires a torque wrench or a Kymco tool that multiplies torque or an impact wrench that goes up to 250 ft-lbs of torque. If you leave the axle nut looser than 235 ft-lbs, normally you will strip the axle and have to replace it. So, there's no real solution to the axle nut situation except the $8 tool and a 3 lb. hammer and to guess at how far to tighten the axle nut up. Remember where the cotter key came out, and tighten it up at least that much.
