If you've got a spare wheel in the well, you can't get in that way. If there isn't one, you can grind off the captive bolt head and push the well out of the way. You still need ingenuity as the catch is quite a way away, but it's a good size hole to work through. If a neat hole (<6mm dia?) on the front panel dead central and about 1" below the top fold sounds bearable, you can release the catch with a screwdriver (then cover the hole with a discrete colour-sprayed cap). Try to check where the cable has broken - you may be able to pull it from somewhere behind the glovebox. With great ingenuity, you may succeed in removing the bumper and reinforcing tube (70 models and later) and hook something through the hole in the front panel. Alternatively try the front access hole the gear change rod is pulled out through; it will probably need drilling the centre screw out of the cover disc (Type 3 part only). Dave.
