Take a look in the right hand tinware where the push-rod tubes run. Does the thermostat work - should expand significantly as the engine warms up. The flaps turned by the rod are activated quite soon - it doesn't need to get really hot before they start to move. Put some easing lubricant on the rods to help break any corrosion. Use engine oil (or spray gtease?) after to keep it lubricated. It must move from closed or it will overheat (Jim's advice to file a notch in the end so you can tell if it's working, but white paint will do this for the moment. You can do it on the middle of the rod by the distributor if it's easier to reach or see. Timing is vital for correct engine temperature. Did it need changing much? It might be worth checking the setting you used (factory info on my website), and that it (and the points) didn't slip after. Dave.
