Hello all,
I think I have a serious problem with the cooling of my 71 Fastback. I drove
it back from a show on Sunday (about a 2 hour drive) and when I got home I
opened the engine compartment and the heat seemed very extreme! After you
couldn’t touch any part of the engine or its components, fan housing, coil,
generator etc were all too hot to touch, even for a second!
How could we tell if the cooling flaps are opening properly? The engine was
rebuilt last November and we repeatedly tested that it worked fine then. How
can they be serviced without pulling the engine?
We put a dab of white paint on the end of the ‘flap arm’ to see if would
move after a drive but I’m reluctant to try this as I want to avoid any
unnecessary damage to the engine.
I did the timing, valve clearance and points on the Friday just in case that
makes any difference.
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks,
Will

I don't know about fastbacks, but if they are anything like Type 34 Karmann
Ghias
there it a $25 air intake boot behind the engine (toward the rear bumper)
that needs to be on or the car will overheat. Look in back of the engine near
the crankshaft pulley. See that rubber device that comes off near the center
of the pulley? That's the
boot I'm talking about. If the old one has deteriorated or come off, install
a new one. At about $25, they are good insurance. It sounds to me like that's
your problem.
