> Sorry to put a spoke in this threads wheels, but, according to the Bentley > (late model) the correct lubricant for the steering box is still > transmission oil (80-90SAE). Data from VW:- The Parts book gives chassis 315 079 951 as a change over. From then there's a plastic cap in the top not a threaded plug (see Russ' recent post). This is when they started using grease rather than oil. Of course, what's been changed in the years between is never easy to tell. The Factory manual bears this out, as it specifies "Liquid transmission grease" for the steering gear from Aug '65. This is not the same as "Lithium grease" (front wheel bearings and axle), "Universal grease" (door and hood locks), or "Hypoid oil" (transmission). Quote from manual:- "The steering gear is filled with a liquid transmission grease. Checking and topping up is therefore unnecessary. The grease need only be changed when the steering has been dismantled." I don't know where you get it from though! Guess what, in the specification pages at the back of this manual (Section T-1, p.9) it mentions the flat-crown piston 1500 twin carb engine. This has an aluminium plate with the wording "M249 90 - OKTAN" fixed to the 2 front screws of the breather mounting. There's a picture too. So we ended up working it out right! Dave.
