The source of my original question here was that Bentley said to use oil while all the steering gearboxes I had ever seen came with grease in them from the factory. I think this has been cleared up now. Early (up to mid 65 or so) gearboxes came with oil lubrication, while the late ones use grease. Only the early ones have the plug that you would need to check and replace the oil which has leaked out. I agree that oil is a better lubricant, but only if you can keep it full.
