I had assumed that this was a manual tranny, but your reference to a 
"real transmission" left me wondering. Which kind is it?

The MOST LIKELY cause is that your front tires are overinflated. VW 
said to use 18-19 psi: I use 20. Many people use 28 all around 
because this is easier to remember.

Your rears should have 27-36 psi depending on the model and the load 
in the car.

If your inflation is right, then you may need new shocks and/or a new 
steering damper and Pitman arm bushing.
