I think Jim has eluded to the real problem here. Studs pull because the engine has been overheated or run too hot. SO MANY rebuilds out there are 1776 or bigger and have way too high a CR and they may seem to run fine but they are actually running consistantly too hot for proper expansion and longevity. Ive never had studs pull on an OE engine that hasnt been through a trauma, and the 72 case I have now has the original installation studs and is fine at around 160K mi. Properly installed case savers are indeed a much stronger solution and may be able to cure the problem for some increase in operating temperature but for the really radical engines or engines that have been truely overheated nothing can suffice. Another thing to watch out for is a case that has seen a severe overheat, such as running out of oil, a clogged oil cooler grate or missing tin. I would find it perhaps hard to identify it when picking one for a rebuild. Jim, Russ, what are the easily seen symptoms that a bare case has seen trauma??
