It is likely that your 72 (is that right?) is still not timed right. It's worth buying the Bentley, studying the UNIQUE timing instructions for the 72, and doing it yourself. No one else will care enough to do this correctly; most won't even know that they're doing it wrong. You MUST also verify that all the vacuum adv/retard mechanisms are working correctly, as the timing effort will fail if they're not. As a start, get a timing light and a book and figure out how to use both of them. It's very useful to just come to an understanding of how this process works and what it's all about. > BTW, any of you in the Northern VA area (my current location) or > NYC area (moving there at the end of March)? He's from Brooklyn, I believe, and also has a 72 square. > Someone mentioned an injector test...how can I check my injectors > to see if they're clogged or leaking? You should just give a visual inspection while to car is running to make sure that the injectors aren't leaking gas out onto the engine. This is far too common, but can usually be fixed by replacing hoses which have deteriorated. The other kinds of problems are less likely, but still possible and you should have the Bentley manual for instructions. > Also, someone mentioned the "Idiot Guide"...the version I used to > have didn't have anything about the type III, though it was rather > old...do the newer versions have information on diagnosing the > D-Jet system? I have good copies of both books available used, but I strongly recommend the Bentley first. While it does not have the Idiot Guide's good karma, it is much more complete and accurate. It's worth slowly studying the Bentley just to get a better idea of how the system works and what kinds of things can go wrong with it. There ARE possibilities which the Bentley does not mention, however; for these problems, this list remains your best resource. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
