Best to go for a well washed white cotton that will reflect as much of the radiation as possible, and not an artificial fibre that may contain chemicals which could attack the surface when hot. I can't understand why VW supplied mainly black vinyl seats to the rest of the world, and black steering wheels to all of us, so we can burn our thighs and backs in the hot sun. Luckily none of my VWs have black vinyl seats, they just get to look that way! The tops of the rear seat on a Fastback quickly become destroyed on the black vinyl ones, while the off-white type go on for a lot longer in similar circumstances. I suspect the plasiciser is at least as much affected by the greater amount of i/r in the spectrum as the smaller amount of higher energy u/v. On w/c VWs there is a lot of trouble with (plasticiser) deposits on the glass from hot air blown through plastic heater pipes, and there's no u/v to cause that. I think it is more the shrinkage that arises as solvents and chemicals in the plastic disperse and denature that causes the cracking. Dave.
