My feeling too. That big locking nut often doesn't get touched, simply because the top adjustment was the only one there on the old boxes. Bentley has the correct info on how to do the two adjustments. Don't forget that the stabilizer bar in the upper front axle tube can give slop in the steering too. You can hold the box and feel for axial and radial movement while you get someone to turn the wheel, or move the coupling pad round and back yourself (and check that's not so cracked it allows slop). But some do need new steering boxes, so I don't see how you can tell until an adjustment is attempted. It's a matter of trust. I rarely use a garage, but I trust the guy I use when it's too heavy a job for me (eg Bus ball-joints). Dave.
