We don't see much evidence in Europe of that, Jim.  Is it mainly the USA?
I think if I had to drill holes myself, I'd rather the fronts were factory
drilled and painted, as the front is much more exposed to the effects of
weather than the rear.

Mind you, there's always a mechanic who can ruin the best designs - our Polo
had its rear plate dealer-fitted with two newly drilled holes, when VW had
provided nicely painted holes with nylon inserts to screw into.  The rust on
the hatch after just a few years had reached the edge of the plate and
become visible.  Doh!
