The generator rating comes out to ~450 Watts (except for early ones which were smaller diameter and 300 Watts.) This amounts to about 2/3 HP (or ~1/2 HP) out of 50-65 possible. This is only about 1%. While the HP available at idle is certainly less, the generator output power is also less at idle so I don't think there is much chance of the power drawn by the generator ever exceeding a couple % of that available. That doesn't seem like enough to be noticable. I think it is unlikely that a generator could overdraw power for long periods without burning up, however. The normal color for the commutator is copper colored with a kind of grey coating. The grey is just graphite from the brushes which both lubricates and conducts. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
