I am not sure what they all do though. Take a look at the switch. It has positions marked 3, 2, 1, 0, J. I take 0 to mean off and J to refer to the relay J which I assume was the intermittent relay. That leaves 3 more positions which would seem to be positions of increasing speed. If this were a 2 speed setup, I would expect the illustration to read: 2, 1, 0, J.
