Re: [T3] Hard to find parts

I (my friend and I) have a few NOS rubber mats in various colors, years, and
models. Other than those, yes they are very hard to come buy.

Marker light bases seem to be plentiful.

Single side drafts are also easily found at any VW swap/show. They have
never been expensive, so I used to buy up every one I found. The hard to
locate parts are the little things to actually put the side draft on. Air
cleaner, hoses, brackets and such can be near impossible to find if you
really nead them.

Most original upholstry is also difficult to find. I used to use a guy in
England for my carpet kits when I was restoring. I put his kit side by side
with a couple pieces of NOS carpet and there is NO way to tell the
difference. I'm still not sure I put the NOS pieces back in their coverings
for storage. 61-63 seat material has always been the most sought after. You
can find some hounds tooth that will be close, and most will accept it as
okay for a restoration because everyone knows how hard it is to find
"correct" material.

Early dash pads are a little expensive, but compare them to the $1800 NOS
dash pad I passed up (still kicking myself) for my 65 911. Type 3 ones seem
fair to me. Dave Orozco always seems to have a type 3 one for sale, so at
least they are available.

I used to have an Eberspacher early model gas heater. I think I sold it a
long time ago though. I never really liked them because they seemed to be a
bit dangerous if you ask me. My friend just sold the type 3 Eberspacher gas
cap cover from it on ebay a while back.

"Correct" rubber (windows, doors, pop-outs, and a few other smaller pieces)
for the early cars is very difficult to find and always has been. I don't
think we have enough to do both #10 and #54.

Pinwheels are available if you know wher to look, but they are pricey.

Chrome strip on the bottom of the dash pad? That's an easy one, try finding
the early '61 chrome strips for the door panels that matches the dash pad
strip.

Anybody ever seen an ivory pull knob for the early clam shell style door
pockets? I could use a couple.

White shift knob? I have an NOS one and a " not very good" one that are
being saved for #10 and #54. I'll take another NOS one if you can find it.

A correct COMPLETE set of beading is pretty hard to put together. I have
some available if anyone needs any. Black and white pieces are gone, DON'T
ASK FOR THEM! I had lots of late model green (couple different) and orange.
I do have a few early sets (all 4 fenders) still. Prices will vary with
piece and color.
